RECEPTION
The counter area of a pharmacy and reception area of a surgery should be clearly identifiable, well sign posted and always have a member of staff present. It is usually the main focal point of your premises and careful space planning must be considered to yield best results.
The flow of customers/patients from the entrance should be towards the reception/counter. Most pharmacies will provide a retail area leading up to counter positions. Reception points should provide information for patients and a lower (DDA) counter provided for wheel chair users. Consider separating the counter area for patients arriving (dropping off scripts) and patients leaving (collection of scripts) to prevent congestion and also promote privacy.
Some locations may include additional security measures, consider including deeper counters to protect staff from agitated patients lunging over, CCTV is also a deterrent against pilferage and assault. Panic alarms located under counter points are a sensible consideration to warn colleagues assistance is required.
